SEPT 1….U.S.A – here we come!

Posted by on September 7, 2012

Flew Qantas this time, much better than United…but oh so tight in the seats, hardly any leg room. 15 hours to Dallas, another hour in customs, arrived to face heatwave. 100 degrees Fahrenheit for days. It has knocked us around and we’ve taken a few days to adjust.  Another great Dodge Caravan hire car and we are off to negotiate the webs of freeways and overpasses – masses of concrete towering over the roads. Stayed in a gorgeous Victorian hotel in downtown Dallas – The Adolphus – and drove down ‘Elm St’ imagining J.F.K. in 1963. The Book Depository Building is a museum now and the hotel doorman told us that the top floor was closed to the public for many many years.

Drove down to Fort Worth, wandered round Sundance Square and then drove over to the historic stockyards about 10pm and went to ‘Billy Bobs Texas, – ‘the world’s biggest honky tonk’. Little did we know, there had been a day long music festival with Hank Williams Jnr and Merle Haggard. The place was hopping, standard dress was jean shorts, cowboy boots and big hats. Next day picked up the double bass ‘rental’ and headed north for OK City.
